Canning Chicken Tortilla Soup

Oct 12, 2026 | Blog, Canning, Food, Recipes

My family enjoys Mexican soups, so I was eager to experiment with this “rebel” canning recipe. I had some success with it; the flavor is quite delicious. However, I didn’t dilute the recipe enough like she suggest, I believe resulting in three out of four quart jars siphoning and failing to seal. I plan to give this recipe another shot, but this time I will skip the cream cheese and heavy cream before canning. I’ll make sure to note on the label to add those ingredients in the slow cooker when I heat it up for dinner.

Found this recipe on thehomemademess.com.  She has many great recipes and tips on her site for anyone who is ok doing “rebel” canning.  If it scares you, don’t try canning it.

**Dairy does thicken in the canner, so make sure you thin out out really good with their milk or I prefer broth. It should be SUPER thin.
