Greenhouse Louver

I installed a louver put in my greenhouse. Given the strong winds we experience in the foothills of Colorado, I wanted to find a method to introduce cooler air without leaving a window or door ajar. With the exhaust fan in place, the louver now effectively draws in that cooler air, helping to expel the warmer air inside during the sunny afternoons. So far, it’s functioning perfectly as I had hoped.
Initially, I set it up without securing it to any sides since it was fairly lightweight. I was uncertain if support was necessary, but despite its lightness, the polycarbonate did buckle slightly. To address this, we located a piece of metal and secured it between the top and bottom frame bars, with the louver in the middle. This effectively eliminated the buckling issue.
I was also worried that installing this louver would provide a simple entry point for mice or rats into the greenhouse. To prevent insects and small animals from getting inside, I installed a window screen and attached 1/4″ wire mesh to the exterior of the louver. To ensure a tight fit, I used duct tape around the edges along with screws and fender washers to secure it in place. Both solutions worked exceptionally well and should effectively keep unwanted visitors out.
The next step involves minimizing the entry of cold air during chilly days and nights. I trimmed some additional insulation to fit inside the vent, positioned between the screen and the louver panels. I added two sections that allow me to slide one open for daytime ventilation and seal it shut at night. Additionally, I crafted an interior cover using an old tarp lined with insulation. With these two measures, I aim to reduce the cold air from coming in when I don’t need it.
I bought two louvers, but I’ll wait to install the second one until spring arrives, when I’ll need additional assistance in managing the daytime heat. The sole drawback of these louvers is the inclusion of blue plastic by the manufacturer, which is quite tedious to take off. Perhaps one day I’ll manage to remove it all — if I’ve got the patience for it.
