Freezing Basil

This year, I thought it would be a brilliant idea to plant a whole bunch of basil in my garden, right next to my peppers and tomatoes, because apparently they’re best buds. Fast forward to now: I’m drowning in basil and feeling like a deer in headlights when it comes to using it. Italian cooking? Not really my jam. But who knows, maybe this herb overload will turn me into the next culinary maestro!

In my quest to avoid turning all this basil into a sad pile of dried leaves, I stumbled upon the genius idea of freezing it in ice cube trays. With nothing to lose but my dignity, I decided to give it a whirl.

I found this gem of a site, SimpleItalianCooking.com, filled with tips on freezing basil. However, here’s the kicker — I don’t own any ice trays that could accommodate my leafy green friends! So, I had an epiphany: why not use my silicone cupcake holders? They’re wider than the average ice tray, so I went for it and filled them up just shy of halfway. Who knew basil could be so much fun? Let’s just hope my future self appreciates this little experiment!
