Setting Up Drip System

May 12, 2025 | Blog, Gardening

For years, I have wished to install a drip irrigation system for all my garden pots. This spring, I decided it was finally time to tackle this project, ensuring my plants stand a better chance of thriving during the summer months. In previous years, after returning from weekend camping trips, I would find my plants extremely parched. With my husband’s assistance, we finally got it setup.

I have two areas where I have set up drip systems.  One area is closer to the house where I now have many medicinal plants.  In years past I planted many pepper and tomato plants here but decided this year I would plant more visually appealing and also feed the bees.  So this year I went with lots of Calendula, California Poppy, Chamomile, and Plantain.  Although Plantain may not be as visually striking as the others, it serves as an excellent medicinal herb that I prefer to keep elevated since rabbits are fond of it.  This area of pots I have setup to run from the well using a timer.

The other area we set up is in my garden.  I have many pots out here.  Many plants are in pots to keep them contained and/or to make it easier to harvest the roots. My husband installed a water spigot in the garden that connects to our sprinkler system, and I’ve hooked up a drip irrigation system to it. This setup enables me to either start the watering manually through an app or program a timer for scheduled watering.  In previous years I had to drag a hose from the other end of our property to manually water these plants.  They too struggled in previous years while we were away on camping trips.

Update for June 4:  In the last few weeks, we’ve experienced a significant amount of rainfall. Although the Orbit timer includes a rain delay feature, it must be manually adjusted on the device itself. If I had the chance to start again, I would choose a model with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capabilities, allowing me to easily set a delay remotely while I’m away during rainy weather.
