Rollie Pollies In Your Garden

Jun 5, 2025 | Blog, Gardening

Last year, I noticed a sh*t ton of rollie pollies, aka pill bugs in my garden bed.  I was curious whether they might harm my plants, but I never found the time to investigate. This spring, I saw an increase in their numbers and noticed some of my plants looking chewed up.  This prompted me to finally research whether they could be contributing to the issue.  It seems likely that they are causing some damage to my plants.

I’ve included a helpful video about it below.  Even before watching, I thought using Diatomaceous Earth would be a good initial step to eliminate them. Therefore, my first course of action will be to apply a generous amount around the garden bed.  I spread some around around each of my plants where I noticed the most damage.  Go figure It rained later tonight so I will need to reapply tomorrow. Hopefully many of them walked through it in the few hours before the rain started.  I plan to apply another layer around each plant daily until it stops raining daily.  Once we get a day or so break from the rain, I’ll apply it in more locations around the garden beds.

**One very important note, you need to be aware before you add diatomaceous earth to your garden, it’s crucial to exercise caution while applying it around your garden.  Do not get any on the leaves, flowers, or any area where you else you see the bees in your garden, as it will kill them as well.  Also avoid putting it where the bees might go to  If you apply it carefully at the base of your plants, it should generally be safe, since bees are unlikely to be found in those areas.**

I post updates with my progress of getting rid of these nuisances and which solution works best for me.
