Candy Board & Quilt Box

In the frosty wonderland of Colorado, I’ve been advised that my bees need two special treats for winter survival: a candy board and a quilt box. Think of it as a cozy winter retreat for them! The candy board is like their personal stash of sweets to keep them chubby and happy during the cold months, while the quilt box is the ultimate bee luxury item, preventing unwanted moisture from turning their hive into a bee swimming pool. Who knew beekeeping came with a spa-like setup?
I was a bit lost on the timing for adding that stuff, and it looks like I should’ve done it a tad earlier! That way, the bees could’ve whipped out their propolis and sealed up the new digs like pros. So far, this fall has been as easy as pie; winter’s playing nice, so they should be A-OK for now. Next year, though, I’ll aim to toss it in around late October — weather permitting, of course. You know, just to keep things exciting!
So, picture this: both the quilt board and the candy board have little doorways for our buzzing buddies. I figured two extra holes were overkill, so I popped some corks in on either side of the quilt box entrance — like a bee bouncer, if you will. As for the candy board? I left that wide open for the bees to check out and decide if they’re feeling sweet or not. I’ll be watching like a hawk to see if they throw a rave in there or just ignore it altogether! 🐝🍬
